Well, things have officially become interesting in the Freeway League playoff race.

Troy marched into La Habra High School and took a tight 63-61 victory over La Habra to place the two teams in a tie for third place in the Freeway League standings thanks to eight 3-pointers by Taylor Maughan, who finished with 28 points.

The victory for the Warriors was its first over La Habra since Feb. 8, 2007, the year before Scott Blake took over as head coach.

La Habra’s Ryan Hall got back to his point-scoring ways, putting up 37 in the loss, but missed 7-of-12 free throws which could have aided in a victory. The senior also missed a good portion of his layups down low.

Troy’s defensive scheme was brilliant: let Ryan Hall get points down low in one-on-one coverage (with an occasional double team) while covering all the perimeter shooters to put it all on the big man’s shoulders.

The tactic worked, La Habra made only three 3-pointers and few other baskets inside other than Hall’s 37 points. Alex Imhof finished with 14 for the Highlanders.

On the other side, it was the Maughan show, similar to when these two teams met up earlier this season. The only difference was Maughan’s ability to stay out of foul trouble, as his four fourth quarter 3-pointers were huge in keeping Troy’s slim lead.

When Maughan went out in the second and third quarters, it was Mo Jomaa hitting big 3-pointers and Ben Stiver inside. The two finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.

La Habra jumped out early, scoring the first six points in the contest and maintaining an 8-2 lead. However, a timeout by Blake sparked the Warriors, who finished the quarter on a 10-4 run.

In the second quarter, Troy gained a lead that they would never give back, though La Habra tied it for a brief moment in the fourth quarter.

Jomaa scored eight of his 11 points in the second quarter, while three others tossed in four points apiece as the Warriors took a 33-29 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Hall went to work for La Habra, starting with a 11-point third quarter, but once again, the senior could only make half of his free throws, allowing Troy to hang on to the lead.

Hall put up 13 more in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors took the victory and a tie for third in the Freeway League with La Habra.

OTHER FREEWAY LEAGUE SCORES:

Sunny Hills 97, Fullerton 72

Sonora 70, Buena Park 42

The second half of Freeway League play starts this Friday once again, La Habra will have the toughest draw of any team at the beginning, with a matchup at home against Troy followed by a road contest against Sunny Hills next Wednesday.

In the teams’ first matchup on Jan. 6, the Warriors got off to a blazing start before foul trouble allowed the Highlanders to take over the third quarter and take the game 68-52.

Taylor Maughan scored all 17 of Troy’s first quarter points, but his foul trouble allowed him only five points from that point on. Now the Warriors have to find another scorer behind Maughan to help take the pressure off.

La Habra’s Ryan Hall was dominant throughout, putting together 30 points, his second consecutive 30+ point effort and Alex Imhof pitched in with a pair of big 3-pointers and 12 total points.

That game was at Troy, so the Highlanders will have home court advantage this time around.

However, they will be facing a more desperate Troy team as a result of the Warriors consecutive losses to Fullerton and Sunny Hills last week, which dropped them to 2-3 in Freeway League play, good for fourth place in the standings and on the outside of an automatic playoff berth.

Troy lost both games last week by a combined six points, but the loss to Fullerton is what has haunted them most as all other contenders for the league championship have cruised past the Indians.

La Habra is coming off a loss of it’s own, a 57-44 setback at Sonora. La Habra has to find other scorers to step up as Ryan Hall continues to draw tons of attention down low.

Against Buena Park, it was Imhof with 22 points, while Marcus Mellado put up 15 points against Fullerton.

Hall will be looking for a big game as well. After his three consecutive 30+ point performances, the senior center has scored a combined 44 points over the last three contests (14.6 points/game).

The game takes place Friday at 7:30 at La Habra High School, where the Highlanders are 1-1 so far in League play with a win over Fullerton and an overtime loss to Sunny Hills. The Warriors are 1-2 on the road so far in League play.

A win is crucial for both sides, La Habra needs it to keep it’s Freeway League title hopes alive, while Troy needs it to contend for a Top 3 finish and an automatic playoff berth.

All season long, the Sonora boys basketball team had been struggling to keep leads in the second half.

An effect caused by an inexperienced team, the Raiders main issue was learning how to take halftime momentum and translating it into second half success and it culminated with a two-point loss to Sunny Hills with less than a minute remaining, a victory that would have knotted up three teams in first place.

After a 57-44 victory over La Habra at home, Sonora (11-11, 3-2) showed that it’s starting to grow up by not only holding the halftime lead, but extending it in the fourth quarter.

Cole Nelson and Jimmy Golden got it started in the first half, as the two combined for 24 of the Raiders 31 points, hitting a multitude of jumpers, the majority of which were contested by the outreached arms of La Habra’s defenders.

On the other end, Ryan Hall had another difficult night down low, as the slightly shorter Nelson and Travis Ryal took turns going one on one with him in the paint.

Murphy said a unique aspect of his team is that it always seems to guard big men very well.

Hall was limited to 16 points, the majority coming in the third quarter. Marcus Mellado added 12 points and Justin Jaimez tallied seven with two big 3-pointers for the Highlanders (14-8, 3-2), who struggled to hit shots and get into rhythm for the majority of the night.

Defensively, Coach Mark Stewart liked the way his Highlanders contested shots and stuck with Sonora’s quicker players, but ultimately, it was a good shooting night for Sonora that took them over the top.

Down by nine at halftime, La Habra started to look like themselves again in the third quarter and though they missed shots, Hall stayed down low to collect offensive rebounds and put them back in for points.

Sonora only mustered five points in the third quarter and as they saw the lead dwindle down to three points heading into the fourth quarter, it seemed as if the same fate would rule the Raiders.

That’s when Kyle Dunn stepped up. The senior leader nailed a big 3-pointer and sank another long range jumper on the Raiders next possession to swing the momentum Sonora’s way for good.

Nelson led the way with 21 points, Golden added 18, but it was Dunn’s seven fourth quarter points that put the game away. Sonora outscored La Habra 21-9 in the final quarter to close out the game in convincing fashion.

Ah, city rivalry time is upon us once again and this basketball rivalry has ranked up there with Orange County’s best these past few years, culminating with last year’s thriller at Sonora when La Habra’s Marcus Wimberly hit a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, leading to the Highlanders’ overtime victory.

Sonora would regroup and return the favor in more convincing fashion at La Habra and the two finished as co-league champions with identical 9-1 league records.

The two defending champions will face off for the first time this season tomorrow night at Sonora High School and if La Habra continues to struggle the way it has against Fullerton and Buena Park, it could take another buzzer-beating shot to determine a victor.

After four consecutive seasons with forwards at 6-foot-7, Sonora and Head Coach Mike Murphy have had to make big adjustments to fit the playing style of the Raiders much smaller 2011-12 roster.

Not only that, Murphy has had to try and get his team to mature at a much quicker pace than normal, as only two players were on his varsity team last year.

Unfortunately, those two players, Cole Nelson and Kyle Dunn, took a while to get adjusted to the leader role and Sonora has struggled to keep leads, especially in the second half.

Inexperience has been a big factor for Sonora, but Murphy has always had the tools in place to aid his team to a successful season and the Raiders are starting to turn the corner.

After a rough 14-point loss to Troy last Friday, the Raiders responded by battling Sunny Hills, the league favorite by far, to a two-point loss, which may have come as a surprise to some other league contenders.

After Troy’s two-point loss to Fullerton on Wednesday, Sonora’s chances for a playoff spot greatly increased and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Sonora trying to go for it all early to try and steal one from the Highlanders at home.

Guard Jimmy Golden leads the squad in points and has been a sharpshooter from the field all season long. Travis Ryal, though not the tallest player on the team, will most likely bang inside with La Habra’s bigger bodies.

The biggest difference maker will be Cole Nelson however, who’s leadership will need to shine in this rivalry game. Nelson possesses good court vision and, though he is the tallest at 6-4, does have a nice mid-range jumper that he’ll pull out of his back pocket from time to time.

If any team could say that they most resemble Sunny Hills’ quick run-and-gun style, it would be Sonora, who uses extremely quick passes to stretch the defense and find lanes.

This could cause more problems for La Habra, which has shown to struggle against faster teams so far this season.

However, the Highlanders are starting to figure out how to guard against teams with speed and should be able to counter with lateral movement in the zone and a longer reach to alter shots.

Against Buena Park, Coach Mark Stewart kept Mario Aparicio inside more often to keep Ryan Hall out of foul trouble. The tactic worked, Hall didn’t record a single foul, but on the offensive side, Buena Park collapsed on him inside, preventing him from moving toward the basket.

Alex Imhof recognized this and took it as a time when he, as a senior, needed to step up and score points. That he did, leading the team with 22 against the Coyotes.

Don’t expect too much different in this one, as Hall inside will still be the focal point. However, opponents are finding ways to stop the dominant center, who has scored 18 and 10 points in his last two games.

This then puts the pressure on those around the perimeter to find ways to get inside and put up shots.

Marcus Mellado figures to get back into the mix after a quiet night against Buena Park and David Desatoff and Aparicio will again be a force to be reckoned with for offensive rebounds.

One thing is for sure, this is no longer the soft part of the schedule for La Habra and that may be a disadvantage against Sonora, who battled contenders Troy and Sunny Hills leading into this game.

La Habra’s reaction to a step-up in competition is the key here and if they aren’t ready, Sonora’s crisp passing and sharp shooting could put the Highlanders right back into a three-way tie and could potentially take away their Freeway League title hopes.

However, if La Habra can at least keep it close at halftime, watch out for the Highlanders’ storm in the second half, as La Habra has thrived late in games while Sonora has struggled.

If you plan on attending the game, do yourself a favor and get there two hours early, as the gym will be as packed for the girls’ varsity game as it is for the boys.

The La Habra boy’s basketball team’s trend of playing down to opponents continued Wednesday night at Buena Park High as the Highlanders needed a strong fourth quarter to pull away from the Coyotes for a 53-40 victory.

Center Ryan Hall was quiet for the majority of the evening despite not picking up a single foul in the game, but received a heavy dose of pressure inside every time he touched the ball.

At almost no point in the ballgame was Hall single-guarded, which meant that other Highlanders would have to step up.

Luckily for La Habra (14-7, 3-1), Alex Imhof understood this calling and put together one of his better games all season, scoring 22 points and taking over both the second and fourth quarters.

For the Coyotes (9-9, 0-4), it was the sixth consecutive loss for a team that had a win streak of eight earlier this season.

Buena Park’s quick defense led to a high number of turnovers for La Habra, as defenders were constantly able to pick away passes. When the ball went inside, the Coyotes swarmed Hall, at times putting four bodies down low with him.

That defense threw La Habra for a loop at first, as the Highlanders didn’t seem too sure on what to do with the situation, allowing Buena Park to take control, and a 10-9 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, it was all Imhof and all defense for La Habra. Imhof put up nine of La Habra’s 12 second quarter points and outscored the entire Buena Park team in the frame, 9-6. The Highlanders took a 21-16 lead at halftime.

However, Coach Shane Painter and his Coyotes would not go down without a fight, and guard Bryan Chavez brought the heavy artillery, throwing down three consecutive 3-pointers to help Buena Park reclaim the lead and breathe new life, at one point going on a 13-2 run.

However, a Justin Jaimez 3-pointer would put an end to the momentum and La Habra would close out the quarter on a 5-0 run. Still, Buena Park, perhaps surprisingly, outscored La Habra 13-11.

Heading into the final quarter, the Highlanders knew what they needed to do to get the victory, and led by Imhof, La Habra became more aggressive on the offensive side, forcing the Coyotes into foul trouble.

When the Highlanders weren’t making shots, they were getting to the foul line, attempting 12 shots from the stripe and they made eight.

On the other side, Justin Bryant made his presence felt with a seven-point fourth quarter after sitting out much of the first three.

But in the end, it was Imhof who sealed the victory with free throws, making 4-of-6 while also making two field goals, to put the game out of reach in favor of La Habra.

While the victory was nice for the Highlanders, there will be much less room for error when they take on city rival Sonora on the road on Friday night. Sonora comes in to the contest after a tough two-point loss to Sunny Hills tonight, 58-56.

–

In the third league game of the night, Fullerton came up with a big upset victory over Troy, 57-55. The Troy Warriors figured to be in the mix for a playoff spot and looked to have solidified it after a victory over Sonora last Friday. That all gets placed in jeopardy with the loss tonight and Sunny Hills coming up on Friday.

For a couple weeks in the preseason, it seemed as if Buena Park’s boys basketball team would make some noise in the Freeway League play, as it continues to follow the trend of other athletic programs and continue to improve and grow.

At one point, the Coyotes rang off eight consecutive victories and saw their overall record reach 9-2. Unfortunately, after a couple brutal weeks, Buena Park is dangerously close to .500 with a home game against La Habra, a player in the Freeway League championship race.

Head Coach Shane Painter and his Coyotes have lost six straight heading into Wednesday’s matchup with the Highlanders, including some lopsided losses to Sunny Hills (73-44) and Troy (63-31).

However, one thing Buena Park has going for them is the fact that La Habra has shown itself to play down to it’s opponents in recent weeks, as evidenced by struggling against Fullerton in a 10-point victory when the consensus was that they would dominate the game.

Teams are starting to realize La Habra’s strategy on offense and have worked diligently on their offense to take big man Ryan Hall out of the game by forcing him into foul trouble.

Over the last two contests, the Highlanders have had to rely on someone other than Hall because of foul trouble. Last Friday, Hall fouled out midway through the fourth quarter and against Sunny Hills last Wednesday, he picked up his fourth foul midway through the third quarter.

If Buena Park can do the same, they have a shot, but they will have to be aggressive inside in order to do so.

Mark Lewis will look to run the offense from the point guard position and a host of talented ball players, most of which also on the football team, will be thinking about driving to the basket.

La Habra, after a tough overtime loss to Sunny Hills and a less-than-stellar performance against Fullerton, will again have to work on getting back to old form.

Luckily for the Highlanders, they are in the softer part of their league schedule, but now they will have to worry about not thinking ahead to city rival Sonora looming a couple days later.

Marcus Mellado has stepped up and done a nice job becoming the team’s clear-cut second leading scorer behind Hall. Mellado has hit at least three shots from beyond the arc in three of his last four games. He is a definite threat to do the same Wednesday night.

Alex Imhof and David Desatoff have been nice scoring additions as well, but more importantly, their defensive aggressiveness has shined through in league play so far. Both are crisp with their hands and have caused more than a handful of turnovers for opposing guards in league play.

But the man that could make the biggest difference is Mario Aparicio, the 6-foot-2 forward that clogs up space in the middle and also works well with getting the ball down low to Hall. If their chemistry is clicking, it’ll be a long night for the Coyotes.

Once again, if Hall can stay out of foul trouble, the Highlanders’ chance for a victory becomes that much greater, but if Buena Park’s aggressiveness inside puts Hall in foul trouble, it could be rewarded with an upset victory at home.

Other Freeway League notes for Games 4 & 5:

The team with the most to gain this week has to be La Habra, which plays Buena Park and Sonora, both on the road. While the Sonora game will be tough, the Raiders have struggled in league play thus far.

On the other side, Sonora is the team with the most to lose this week. They come into the week with a 2-1 league record, tied with Troy and La Habra for second place in the Freeway League behind Sunny Hills. However, the Raiders play both Sunny Hills and La Habra to close out the first half of league play. Sonora will need at least one victory to keep itself in comfortable position for a playoff berth.

Aside from Sunny Hills, Troy is the team on the rise with a blowout victory over Buena Park and a big win over Sonora last Friday. The Warriors played Sunny Hills last year in a one-game playoff to earn the third and final spot in playoffs and held a lead halfway through the third quarter on the road before the Lancers came back and claimed the victory….

When the two teams play on Friday, that loss will definitely be on Troy’s mind as last year’s team was young, so it’s definitely a pick for my Freeway League game of the week.

La Habra’s boy’s basketball team overcame a wealth of bad passes and turnovers to get back into the win column with a 65-55 home victory over Fullerton High, Friday night.

The third quarter once again proved to be the big difference as the Highlanders (13-7, 2-1) outscored Fullerton 20-8 and spread the ball around on offense, as four different players had at least two baskets.

It was another breakout game for Marcus Mellado, who earned player-of-the-game honors after draining three 3-pointers in the first half and coming alive in the fourth quarter when La Habra needed someone to step up and keep the lead after Ryan Hall had fouled out.

The senior center, who fouled out with four minutes remaining, was held to 16 points as Fullerton (6-10, 0-3) clogged the inside with big bodies, forcing Hall to find someone around the perimeter.

The Indians were led by Israel Barrera and Daniel Tovar who scored 23 and 13 points respectively. Tovar challenged Hall down low for rebounds, and ended up with seven on the night, three on the offensive side.

La Habra, as its done all season, got started quickly in the first quarter, lobbing passes inside to Hall, who made the moves to get positioning for easy baskets.

Hall scored eight points in the first quarter and Mellado came up with a big 3-pointer from the corner as La Habra jumped to a 17-13 lead and expanded on it in the second quarter despite no scoring from Hall.

Mellado hit two more big shots and Alex Imhof drove inside for four tough points to match the output by Fullerton’s Barrera in the second quarter. The duo and Barrera scored 12 points each, but La Habra extended the leadto 32-27 at half.

Drawing on the memory of what Sunny Hills did to them on Wednesday night, the Highlanders came out fired up to start the third quarter and immediately stretched their lead to as high as 17 points, but Barrera and guard Tyler Place aided in helping Fullerton creep back in toward the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, frustrations started to mount on both sides and reserve Reagan Stanford of Fullerton sparked some emotions with a hard foul on Imhof. Moments later, Fullerton’s Place intentionally bumped Mellado on a fast break, earning him an intentional foul.

Stanford picked up three quick fouls, all doing a considerable amount of damage, allowing Imhof to head to the line for six free throw attempts, of which he made three.

It was another off night for the Highlanders at the line, as they continue to struggle in that category during league play.

But the fouls allowed La Habra to maintain the lead without Hall on the court and with the game out of reach, Coach Mark Stewart put in his reserves, which allowed the Indians to get back in the game a bit.

Troy 63, Sonora 51

The Warriors (15-4, 2-1) picked up a big victory at home over Sonora (10-10, 2-1), creating an early three-way tie for second place in the Freeway League with La Habra and Sonora. All three look up at Sunny Hills (16-5, 3-0), who picked up a home victory over Buena Park (9-8, 0-3), 73-44.

After experiencing more ups and downs in it’s Wednesday night loss against Sunny Hills than the rest of its season, the La Habra basketball team will be looking to rebound in a big way when it takes on Fullerton at home Friday night.

However, this game for both squads could depend on how La Habra responds to such a tough overtime loss.

If the Highlanders allow the loss to stick in their minds during their Friday contest, Fullerton has the ability to steal away a victory with first-year coach Rob Alexander at the helm.

Ever since former head coach Bill Czech left to coach at Hope University, Fullerton has sat at or near the bottom of the Freeway League standings in just about every season.

That doesn’t mean that the Indians don’t have the talent to defeat a higher-ranked team however, as they battled Sunny Hills tough before the Lancers pulled away for a 12-point victory.

Fullerton bounced to an early lead, 11-8 after the first quarter, against Sonora at home on Wednesday before the Raiders took over, outscoring Fullerton by 17 points the rest of the way en route to a 61-47 victory.

The Indians were led by Israel Berrera and Gerald Scott, who scored 18 and 10 points respectively. Scott is a junior guard with a lot of speed and play-making ability, while Berrera looks to hold responsibility over Ryan Hall as long as he can stay out of foul trouble.

If Berrera can’t stay out of foul trouble, Fullerton has a senior-heavy squad featuring a couple others at 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-3, including seniors John Paul Hoang and Kyren Griffen. Daniel Tovar also has the ability to make a difference in the scoring.

This is what could be considered a trap game for La Habra, where a team overlooks an opponent because a tougher one is coming up and ends up losing to a team they should have beaten handily.

The Highlanders are in the easier part of their league schedule after tough battles against Troy and Sunny Hills and in the standings, they look up at Sunny Hills and Sonora, the latter of which they will play next Friday.

Hall scored 30 points, his third consecutive game scoring 30 or more, but was not much of a factor for most of the second half because of foul trouble.

However, others stepped up around him, whether it was David Desatoff and Mario Aparicio with rebounds, or Alex Imhof and Brett Bartolone with clutch scoring.

Marcus Mellado paced his way to 14 points, and a gnarly cut under his left eye, but Sunny Hills’ quick defense kept any other players from reaching double digits.

If La Habra comes in with a clear mind and focuses on the task at hand (effectively following Coach Mark Stewart’s one-game-at-a-time approach), they should be able to come out on top. If they continue to dwell on what could have been with Sunny Hills, or think ahead to Sonora the following week, they could be in for a surprise.

Make sure you tune in on SportsNetUSA.net this Friday at 7:30pm to catch the action live if you can’t make it to La Habra High School.

Deadlocked at 65-65 at the end of regulation, Sunny Hills outlasted La Habra on the road in overtime to take a 78-71 victory and, in effect, becoming the early favorite to win the Freeway League title.

La Habra stormed out to leads of seven and nine points to start the first and second quarters, but the Lancers battled back both times, closing the distance to just one point heading into the half.

During the second half, it was Sunny Hills who broke away early on as Martin Kim took over, scoring 11 of his 24 points in the frame, including 4-of-4 from the free throw line. Overall, Kim would hit 11-of-12 free throws for the game.

La Habra answered the call, however, and even though the Lancers had hit a barrage of three-pointers, the Highlanders stayed patient, waited for their opportunities and after sophomore David Desatoff stole an inbound Sunny Hills pass and got fouled, had a chance to put the game away with free throws.

But Desatoff couldn’t connect and Sunny Hills was kept alive.

In the overtime period, the Highlanders once again built an early four-point lead thanks to baskets by Mario Aparicio and Ryan Hall, but once again the Lancers closed the gap and took over, becoming the aggressors and forcing La Habra to foul.

But Kim was ready for it, sinking 7-of-8 free throws in overtime to seal the deal for Sunny Hills, who moved to 15-5 overall and 2-0 in Freeway League play.

The 6-foot-7 Hall dominated early on, scoring the Highlanders first nine points of the game and first 13 of 18 in the first quarter.

But then Sunny Hills found ways to put the senior in foul trouble, putting pressure on him inside and forcing him into some bad situations with their quickness and aggression.

Hall ended the half with 17 points and three fouls before quickly picking up his fourth midway through the third quarter. La Habra’s leading scorer would sit out the next 4:40 of the game before being reinserted just after the fourth quarter started.

Sunny Hills used this to build their advantage. Kim, Dylan Nahrwold and Max Thurman all hit big three-pointers to lift the Lancers to a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Even in the fourth quarter though, other members of La Habra’s squad stepped up in place of Hall. Guard Alex Imhof chipped in with six tough points while Brett Bartolone, Desatoff and Aparicio also contributed.

Ultimately though, they were just a free throw short as the game went four extra minutes.

Sunny Hills used that to steal the momentum, and the game, back to their side.

Hall led all scorers with 30 points, while Marcus Mellado added 14 for La Habra. Kim put up 24 points for Sunny Hills, while the sophomore Thurman added 17 points.

La Habra (12-7, 1-1) will try to rebound against Fullerton at home on Friday, while Sunny Hills will host Buena Park.

Perhaps the biggest game of the week in the Freeway League takes place tomorrow at La Habra High School when the visiting Sunny Hills Lancers (14-5, 1-0) take on the defending league champion La Habra Highlanders (12-6, 1-0).

As is always the case when these two teams play, the easiest way to preview this game is by saying whoever gets their opponent to adjust to their tempo will be the victor.

Add to the mix that these two teams are the frontrunners for a league title and you have the makings of possibly the most exciting league game of the season…well, until the teams meet again Feb. 1 at Sunny Hills High.

The Lancers come into the contest with an 8-2 record in their last 10 games. Those two losses came by a combined eight points to Upland (10-5) and JSerra (10-5).

Sunny Hills for the past few years has possessed a smaller team, height-wise, than most other schools, but the team utilizes it’s speed and sharp-shooting ability to rack up an impressive 75 points per game, leading the Freeway League in that category by far for preseason play.

How impressive has that shooting been? The Lancers make 46 percent of their shots and over half of them from inside the three-point line. Beyond the arc hasn’t been so bad for Sunny Hills either, as the team connects on 36 percent of shots from long distance.

Martin Kim, back for his senior season, leads the team with 17.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. But perhaps the most impressive player thus far has been Jasper “JR” Parker, a transfer from Savanna High a year ago, who is second in scoring (15.5 ppg), rebounds (4.5 rpg) and leads the team by a wide margin in assists with 92. He will be the player to watch to set up the Lancer offense and lead the fast breaks.

On the other side, if La Habra can slow down and disrupt the Lancer offense in any way, shape or form, then it gives itself a much larger chance of winning.

It’s no secret that Ryan Hall and his 25.2 ppg will be the focal point of La Habra’s offense. His 6-foot-7 frame will be a huge difference-maker as well, but can his teammates get involved.

Marcus Mellado and Alex Imhof have shared the duties of trying to be the second go-to guy this season as both are averaging just under 10 points per game.

More importantly, however, is La Habra’s rebounding ability. The Highlanders average just shy of 30 rebounds a game and they will need all of them on the defensive end to prevent Sunny Hills from having any second-chance opportunities.

La Habra also prepares to put a different style of defensive pressure on Sunny Hills to try to get them to play more from the half-court offense and as Hall pointed out on The High School Sports Zone last night, the team is 9-1 against Sunny Hills when they play that style of defense.

The Highlanders come into the contest riding a four-game win streak and have posted a 7-3 record in their last 10 games with losses to Long Beach Millikan (4-12), Servite (9-9) which they later avenged, and Foothill (14-3).

While the focus will be on Hall’s play inside, if there is one person who could make a big difference, it could be David Desatoff, who has the ability to change the game with his long-range shooting ability. Watch out for big Mario Aparicio inside too.

The Highlanders come into the contest scoring 61 points per game, well below the average for Sunny Hills, but La Habra will focus on it’s defense as the big key to victory.

Simply put: A higher-scoring contest favors Sunny Hills, but if La Habra keeps it close at halftime, watch out because the Highlanders score the bulk of their points in the second half.
